The most important and precious possession I have on this earth is my family. My incredible wife, Melody, and I have been married since 2003. She has been an educator in numerous areas, and now homeschools our four kids. Those kids are each awesome and unique. We have athletes, artists, writers, musicians, thinkers, pranksters, gamers, and so much more. As a family, we love the outdoors, camping, sports, new experiences, travel, and family movie or game nights.
I was blessed to be born to Christian parents who were (and still are) active in our local church. I came to faith at 13 while attending Centrifuge youth camp at Union University in TN. As a teenager, I was a nominal follower of Christ, and didn't really get serious about my faith until I began college at Ouachita Baptist University. Once there, I was surrounded by other guys my age who were serious about their faith and God used their influence to convict me about my own shallow discipleship. Soon after getting serious about my faith, God turned my heart from pursuing a career in medicine to pursuing a call to ministry. When I called my parents to tell them about the change, my mom said, "I'm not surprised because when you were a little kid, you said you were going to be a preacher and a teacher." So, it appears God had a plan for my life even before I realized it! Since that time, I have been pursuing my relationship with the Lord through highs and lows. Some things God has taught me many things through his gracious tough love. I'm eternally grateful that he offered salvation through the life changing grace and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.
There has never really been a question in my mind of whether I was going to attend a church or not, but I have now had a multiple decade journey of discovering what part the church would play in my life. I describe God's call on my life as less of a call to a specific ministry, and more of a call away from my selfish pursuits. That simply means that, unlike some of my ministry friends who felt called to preach when they were young teens, God has revealed his next step for me as we've walked together. I think if God had shown me then where I would be now, it probably would have been more terrifying than comforting. But, as I have walked with him through various seasons in life, he has confirmed in my heart through prayer, circumstances, and fellow believers where he was leading me in my next phase.
In all these things, I believe my foundational calling remains the same. My mission is to help people know and live God's Word. Currently, I have the joy of fulfilling that mission as the Pastor at First Baptist Church in Round Rock, TX. I'm also currently an adjunct professor with Howard Payne University and co-host the Rookie Pastors Podcast with three fellow pastors.
I love God's Word. The greatest joy in my ministry life is teaching His Word in a clear, deep, and accessible way, and seeing the light come on in someone's life as they finally understand a new biblical truth.
I am available for speaking at your church, retreat, or other ministry event. As an author, I'm open to collaborating on Christian focused writing projects. Let's connect and see how we can work together!
